Prior to expansion of Broadmoor Hospital and construction of a new wing, an extensive EcIA of the surrounding estate was undertaken by EPR. As part of this undertaking surveys of the aquatic flora and invertebrate communities were required for various aquatic habitats on the estate. These habitats included: small ditches, streams and several ponds, developed as either fishing lakes or as balancing ponds to control flows, as well as marshy pools in groundwater-fed, flooded lowland grassland.
Due to the very small nature of most of the watercourses aquatic invertebrate diversity was limited but the fishing ponds were of particular interest, containing populations of three nationally scarce or rare water bugs and breeding populations of the nationally scarce downy emerald and brilliant emerald dragonflies.
