The First Time Sewerage Scheme was a project carried out by Welsh water to connect properties in the small village of Peterstone Wentlooge to the main sewerage line, the Cardiff scheme Interceptor Sewer. The village lies on the Wentlooge Levels, part of the wider Gwent Levels in South Wales, a nationally important area of coastal grazing marsh, notable for its diverse communities of aquatic flora and invertebrates.
Due to the significant importance of the area, in particular its aquatic and wetland wildlife, surveys of the aquatic and marginal floral and invertebrate interests of reens close to the works were required to monitor any potential impact on their biota. The reens were relatively small compared to some of the drainage ditches across the levels, although they still harboured fairly diverse communities including several nationally scarce species of water beetle.
