Torr Quarry

A small stream flows through a green field with dense bushes.

Ecological Planning and Research

Torr Quarry lies in the eastern Mendip Hills of Somerset and is an active limestone quarry with outfalls that discharge drainage water from the base of the workings into three separate watercourses: Whatley Brook, Nunney Brook and the upper reaches of the River Alham. An initial base-line survey of the aquatic invertebrate communities within each watercourse, in the vicinity of the respective outfalls, was carried out to assess any potential impact on the biota, with subsequent monitoring in later years.

Surveys were carried out in April and October at control sites above the outfalls and at several downstream sites to monitor any potential impacts.
