Trewithen Dairy near Lostwithiel in Cornwall, abstracts water from a series of licensed boreholes. Under the terms of the abstraction licence the dairy is required to monitor the impacts from the abstractions on the surrounding stream catchments to ensure that water levels in the streams do not drop to levels that would be detrimental to their invertebrate fauna. Monitoring of the aquatic invertebrate assemblages within four catchments Bofarnal Stream, Drift Stream, Greymare Stream and Hollycoombe Stream, has been undertaken over several years, with assessment of the communities using RIVPACS analysis and LIFE scores. All of the sites continue to show high diversity for such small watercourses, with no discernible impact upon their fauna from the dairy’s abstractions.
